Noble Hall Field Committee Presents School Board with $700,000
Check represents year-long fundraising efforts for Noble Hall Field

On Monday, June 1, Mindy Nuhring and Tom Saxhaug, co-chairs of the Noble Hall Field Improvement Committee, presented the ISD 318 School Board with a check for $700,000. The payment represents a year-long fundraising campaign to add turf to Noble Hall Field.

“We are so excited that we were able to raise the money needed for this project and present this check to the school district.  AND to have the project completed before the start of the 2020-2021 school year,” said Nuhring. “A huge thank you to all the organizations and individuals that donated to this project – we are looking forward to seeing local youth and community playing and practicing on this field!”

Summer Meals Available for Kids

ISD 318 meal delivery will end on Tuesday, June 2, but summer meals will still be available for all children under the age of 18. Breakfast and lunch will be available for pick up from 11:00 - 11:30 am Monday through Friday at RJEMS and Southwest Elementary. Bigfork School will also have pick up available on Monday and Wednesday. At Bigfork, students will be able to pick up meals for multiple days.

ISD 318 Adapts Graduation Plans to Meet MDH Guidelines
Plans to celebrate Class of 2020 will include rigorous social distance measures

On Friday, May 8, the Minnesota Departments of Health and Education announced new guidelines for graduation ceremonies. “Schools are seeking clarification and guidance on how they can safely observe and honor the occasion in alignment with public health guidance to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the community,” explained the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) in their guidance document.

Graduation Plans Announced for Bigfork and Grand Rapids High Schools
Families and residents invited to celebrate Class of 2020 in community parades

There is no denying the Class of 2020 has had a school year unlike any other. And their graduation will be singular as well, but in the best way possible.

“Graduation is a milestone event. We know how important this event is to our students and their families. Our high schools have come up with plans for special events that recognizes the outstanding accomplishments and achievements of the Class of 2020,” said Superintendent Sean Martinson.

Four Bigfork Students Named to NMRC All-Academic Team
Robotics students recognized for excellence

The Northern Minnesota Robotics Conference (NMRC) is pleased to announce our 2020 Conference All-Academic Team. The team includes four students from Bigfork High School's Backwoods Bots - Andie Chase, Senior; Ashton Powell, Junior; Michelle Holloway, Sophomore; and Lily Danielson, Freshman.

The NMRC All-Academic Award program recognizes the academic excellence (based on GPA) of participating High School students with in the Northern Minnesota Robotics Conference. To earn NMRC All-Academic Team honors, a student must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher (based on a 4.0 scale) for this current year. This honor is open to students in grade levels 9-12. In addition to the GPA requirement a student must meet all varsity level “Lettering” requirements set by their team or school district as well. Students are able to receive this award on an annual basis. The conference consists of 26 teams across the Northern part of the state along with one team from North Dakota. These teams come from the communities of Northwood (ND), Warroad, Deer River, Grand Marais, Nevis, Cass Lake-Bena, Thief River Falls, Pine River-Backus, Alexandria, Badger, Bemidji, Blackduck, Upsala, Frazee-Vergas, Little Falls, Bigfork, Babbit, Stephen-Argyle, Pequot Lakes, International Falls, Crosby-Ironton, Kelliher, Red Lake, and Swanville.

ISD 318 Board will enter into negotiations with Matt Grose for Superintendent

After two day-long interviews with finalists that included focus groups with students, staff, and community members, the ISD 318 School Board will enter into negotiations with Matt Grose for Superintendent.

“We’re very pleased to have Matt as a part of our team. We have an exciting school year ahead of us and think Matt will do a great job leading the district through it and beyond,” said School Board Chair Pat Medure.

Southwest Kids are Supporting Students Across the Sea

Students in St Kitt's ReadingImagine trying to learn to read without any books!  Imagine living in a place that doesn’t even have a bookstore!  That is just what Mrs. Colleen Olson and her husband Greig saw when they traveled to the tiny island nation of St. Kitts in February of 2019.  Mr. and Mrs. Olson volunteered at the Tucker Clarke Primary school, a school that has the same number of students as Southwest Elementary.  They noticed that there were no books in the classroom.  They had only blank notebooks and a chalkboard.

District 318 Endowment Fund Awards Over $27,000 in Grants for 2019-2020 School Year

The District 318 Endowment Fund has announced its grants recipients for the 2019-2020 school year. Twenty-five area educators will receive funds totaling $27,472.27 to advance various learning experiences in and out of the classroom for hundreds of District 318 students. 

The District 318 Endowment Fund, a non-profit organization, exists to provide supplemental funding independent of the school budget for educational enrichment opportunities for students in District 318 public schools.

ISD 318 Truth in Taxation Meeting

The ISD 318 School District held it's annual Truth in Taxation Meeting on December 2, 2019. The total 2020 proposed property tax levy is a decrease from 2019 of 3.64%. The presentation is available in full here
